Abstract

The use of nanotechnology has revolutionized the field of medicine, showing great results in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. In the pharmaceutical field, nanotechnology has resulted in the development of nanodrug delivery systems, which can intensify the solubility and availability of drugs, delay their release and alleviate side effects. The objective of this summary is to investigate the role of nanotechnologies in improving drug delivery systems, highlighting their advantages in therapeutic efficacy and toxicity reduction. A narrative literature review was carried out with searches for articles in Pubmed and Scielo, using the descriptors “nanotechnology, nanoparticles, medicines” in the period from 2018 to 2023. 12,520 articles were found on the subject, of which 4 were selected for this summary. Nanostructures facilitate the precise distribution of water-insoluble drugs, prolong their stay in the circulatory system, facilitate cellular absorption and ensure action at the target site. Studies prove that the combination of nanoparticles with natural compounds reduces toxicity, increasing biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, there are questions to be addressed regarding the safety of nanoparticles, which requires further research to ensure their implementation is safe. The incorporation of nanotechnology into medicine promises great advancement in the personalization of treatments, thus increasing therapeutic efficacy and improving clinical results. This offers new perspectives for creating safer and more effective therapies.
